The Board of Deacons consists of nine members elected by the congregation for a three year term. The primary responsibility of the deacons is to provide congregational care.  Each deacon is responsible for being a contact for specific members and friends of Kirkwood so that emotional support, prayers and other assistance can be provided as needed for all who are a part of our church family.  The Deacons communicate regularly with their assigned members and friends to foster a sense of community, friendship and fellowship at Kirkwood.

Deacons: Ann Gisch, Beverly Harding, Jim Heidenreich, Carin Hickey, Clydette Lobred, Tammy Mottl, Joyce Nelson, Jan Pickrel, and Sandy Webster (Moderator).

Some activities of the deacons include:

  • Providing congregational care through various means, such as personal visits, phone calls, e-mails and greeting cards to members.
  • Being available after worship service for congregational care.
  • Communicating and coordinating with church elders and the pastor.
  • Stay informed about church activities by rotating attendance at monthly session meetings and acting as liaisons to church committees.
  • Coordinating preparation and delivery of meals to members and friends in times of illness, death and other needs.
  • Coordinating volunteer drivers as needed for those needing transportation to church activities and medical appointments.
  • Assisting in the delivery of Thanksgiving Baskets prepared by Kirkwood for needy families in the Springfield community.
  • Celebrating the children and youth of our congregation with such things as a rose on the chancel table for the birth of a baby, cards and other communications to young people away at school or in military service.
  • Assisting in the welcoming of new members.
  • Co-leading and participating in Kirkwood's Prayer Ring which enables members and friends to share joys and concerns and request prayers for themselves or others.
  • Coordinating the Kirkwood Support Group on Aging.
  • Coordinating the Prayer Quilt Ministry in which members and friends of Kirkwood tie a knot on a handmade quilt and say a prayer for the quilt's recipient: a person who has experienced a serious illness or has a special ongoing need for the love and prayers of others.
