The Board of Deacons consists of up to nine members elected by the congregation, typically for three-year terms. The primary responsibility of the deacons is to provide congregational care. Each deacon is responsible for being a contact for specific members and friends of Kirkwood so that emotional support, prayers and other assistance can be provided as needed for all who are a part of our church family. The Deacons communicate regularly with their assigned members and friends to foster a sense of community, friendship and fellowship at Kirkwood.
Current Deacons: Susanna Campbell, Clydette Lobred, Makda Michael, Will Newman (Moderator), and Kathy Pester.
Some activities of the deacons include:
- Providing congregational care through various means, such as personal visits, phone calls, e-mails and greeting cards to members.
- Being available after worship service for congregational care.
- Communicating and coordinating with church elders and the pastor.
- Staying informed about church activities by rotating attendance at monthly session meetings and acting as liaisons to church committees.
- Coordinating preparation and delivery of meals to members and friends in times of illness, death and other needs.
- Coordinating delivery of prayer quilts and/or pillows to members and friends in times of illness.
- Coordinating volunteer drivers as needed for those needing transportation to church activities and medical appointments.
- Coordinating with the KPC Mission Committee and ECHO (Ecumenical Community Helping Others) to collect donations from Kirkwood and provide grocery gift cards at Thanksgiving and Christmas for needy families in the Springfield community.
- Celebrating the children and youth of our congregation with such things as a rose on the chancel table for the birth of a baby, cards and other communications to young people away at school or in military service.
- Assisting in the welcoming of new members.
- Co-leading and participating in Kirkwood's Prayer Ring which enables members and friends to share joys and concerns and request prayers for themselves or others.
